Rascarasca Health Notes is a library of general information. It can help you understand a subject, prepare for an appointment or feel less alone with a question. It cannot examine you, know your medical history or take responsibility for your health. Please read this page before relying on anything you find here.

Who writes the entries

The four writers behind this library use pen names and hold no medical, dental, midwifery or pharmacy qualifications. We read carefully and write cautiously, but we are not professionals and nothing here should be treated as professional advice.

What the library will not give you

  • A diagnosis of any symptom or condition.
  • Doses, strengths or schedules for medicines, nicotine replacement or supplements.
  • Advice on stopping, starting or changing any prescribed treatment.
  • A judgement about whether a product or procedure is right for you.

Who to talk to instead

If your question is aboutA good first contact
Teeth, gums, dentures or mouth painYour dentist or a dental helpline
Medicines, nicotine replacement or minor ailmentsA pharmacist
Pregnancy, birth or a newbornYour midwife, health visitor or maternity unit
Mood, stress or general healthYour GP or family doctor
Stopping smokingA local stop-smoking service, pharmacist or GP

When not to read, but act

Some situations need help immediately, not an article. Call your local emergency number if someone has chest pain, sudden difficulty breathing, signs of a stroke, heavy bleeding, a seizure, a severe allergic reaction or swelling that affects breathing or swallowing. During pregnancy, contact your maternity unit straight away about bleeding, fluid loss, severe pain, headaches with vision changes or a change in your baby's movements. If you are thinking about harming yourself, contact emergency services or a crisis line in your country now.

Information changes

Health guidance is updated as knowledge grows, and recommendations differ between countries. An entry that was accurate when written may be outdated later. When something you read here differs from what a professional who knows you has said, follow the professional.

Products and brands

Some entries mention named products or services because they are part of the topic. A mention is not a recommendation that they suit you. Vaping products in particular are not harmless and are only relevant for adults who already smoke.

Using the library well

The best way to use these pages is as preparation: read, note your questions and take them to someone qualified. Our article on getting ready for a health checkup shows how that can work in practice. The wider ground rules are set out in our Terms of Reading.

Rascarasca Health Notes

Worth saying plainly

These pages prepare you; they do not examine you

Everything in this library is written by people without clinical training. It can help you understand a subject or put a worry into words, but it cannot see your history, your medicines or what a professional would notice in the room.

When an entry suggests calling a dentist, pharmacist, midwife or GP, that line is the most important one on the page. Acting on it early is rarely a waste of anyone's time.
