The Writers Behind the Notes

  1. Four desks, four subjects
  2. How the work is shared
  3. What we will not do

Every entry in this library starts on someone's desk, and there are four desks. We write under pen names because the work matters more than the person typing it, and because none of us wants a byline to suggest an authority we do not have. Not one of us is a clinician. We are careful readers who enjoy turning tangled information into something a tired person can follow.

Four desks, four subjects

Fenella

Fenella looks after the Smile & Teeth shelf. She is drawn to the practical side of mouth care: what to do at the basin each evening, how to describe a worry at the dental front desk and how nervous patients can get through the door. She has a soft spot for questions that people feel silly asking.

Corwen

Corwen writes for Smoke-Free Living and Men's Wellbeing. He keeps the smoking entries firmly aimed at adults who already smoke and want to stop, and the men's entries focused on subjects that tend to stay unspoken. Every draft he files ends with a clear route to a pharmacist, GP or support service.

Quenby

Quenby covers Pregnancy & Early Days. Her entries are about the practical and emotional side of the months before and after a birth, from packing a bag to surviving broken nights. Anything that sounds like a symptom is pointed straight towards a midwife, health visitor or doctor.

Gwendal

Gwendal is the house editor and also writes about communication between patients and the people who care for them. Every draft passes across his desk before it appears, and he is the one who trims sentences that sound too certain. He also reads the correction emails first.

How the work is shared

We pick topics from reader questions and from gaps we notice on the shelves. The writer who knows a subject best drafts it; a second writer reads it against the sources; Gwendal edits for clarity and caution. The full journey is described on From Draft to Page, and the checks we run on facts and wording are listed on Checking Before Publishing.

What we will not do

  • Pretend to be doctors, dentists, midwives or therapists.
  • Offer a diagnosis or tell anyone which medicine or strength to take.
  • Invent figures, studies or quotes to make an entry sound weightier.
  • Suggest that vaping is safe, or that anyone who does not smoke should try it.

If you want to write to any of us, the address on Say Hola reaches all four desks.

Promises among the four

Rules each of us agreed before writing a word

The four of us agreed on these before the first entry went up.

  • Write under a pen name and never imply a qualification we do not hold
  • Name the right professional in every entry, near where it will be read
  • Leave out any figure we cannot trace to a trustworthy source
  • Keep smoking entries aimed at adults who already smoke
  • Hand every draft to a second writer before it reaches the editor

Sharing the desks

How the four of us divide the work

Each shelf has an owner, but no entry is ever the work of one person alone.

  1. Shelf owner drafts

Fenella, Corwen or Quenby writes the first version on their own subject.

  2. A colleague reads

Another writer checks the draft against the background it was built on.

  3. The editor shapes

Gwendal edits for clarity and caution and checks the help section.

  4. Readers refine

Corrections and questions from readers feed into later revisions.
